Overview

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is proposing to implement a new provincial assessment and evaluation plan for high school students in the 2025-26 school year. Provincial assessments are administered by the Department of Education. The proposed plan includes Literacy and Numeracy Assessments and Course-Based Evaluations, which are summarized below.

Literacy and Numeracy AssessmentsCourse-Based Evaluations
  • Measures literacy and numeracy skills in Grade 10 students
  • Not connected to any specific subject or course
  • Students can retake the assessment in Grade 11 and Grade 12 
  • A graduation requirement
     
  • Measures student learning of course outcomes
  • Occurs only for select 3000-level courses in English, mathematics, and laboratory sciences
  • Worth 30% of a student’s final course mark 
  • Modular approach meaning courses are divided into three modules, with an exam worth 10% for each module 
  • Students can retake module 1 and/or module 2 exams at the end of the course 

The Department of Education would like to hear your feedback about the proposed new assessment plan for high school students. If you are answering this questionnaire on behalf an organization, you will be asked the name of the organization at the end. For everyone else, your answers are anonymous, meaning you will not be asked for information that tells us who you are. Your responses are confidential and will only be used for research purposes to help develop the assessment plan. Feedback will only be shared in a way that protects your identity.
